How to calculate hours between two times
- Enter the start time and choose AM or PM.
- Enter the end time. If it is earlier than the start, the calculator assumes the next day.
- Enter any unpaid break in minutes. The result shows hours:minutes, decimal hours and total minutes.
Worked example
A night shift from 10:00 PM to 6:30 AM. The end is earlier than the start, so add 24 hours: 6:30 + 24:00 − 22:00 = 8:30. Take off a 30-minute unpaid break and the shift is 8:00, or 8.00 hours.
Frequently asked questions
What happens when the shift crosses midnight?
When the end time is earlier than the start time, 24 hours are added and a note appears under the end time. Nothing else changes.
What is the difference between 8:30 and 8.30?
8:30 is 8 hours 30 minutes. 8.30 is a decimal, 8 hours and 18 minutes. The calculator shows both so you can copy the one your payroll expects.
Can I enter 24-hour times?
Yes. 1730 or 17:30 is read as 5:30 PM, and the AM/PM toggle is ignored for hours above 12.
How do I get the result in minutes?
Multiply the hours by 60 and add the minutes. 8:00 is 480 minutes; it is shown in the result box.
Does this count days between dates?
No, it works with clock times only. For dates, use the Business Days Calculator .
